French Colonies
Louis XIV 30 Deniers (Mousquetaire) 1712-AA XF40 NGC, Metz mint, KM378.1 (under France), cf. Vlack-13c (R8; there with denomination restamped). 18mm. Small flan variety. Perhaps only the second known example of this extremely rare 30 Deniers executed on a 15 Deniers or 1/2 Mousquetaire flan. Originally minted as a means of payment for French troops, the 'Mousquetaires' quickly gained widespread circulation throughout the American colonies and well into Canada. While the specimen in the John J. Ford collection was cataloged as an error, it is possible that these pieces were meant as an experiment, with Vlack's number 13c showing an example where the denomination XV was restruck over XXX. Notably missing from the Doug Robins collection, and extremely rare.
