German States
Jülich. Friedrich Pithan Uniface Siege Klippe 14 Stüber 1621 AU55 PCGS, KM45, Neumann-Unl. Stamped 16-Z1 IN GVL BE-LE G (in Gulick belegert, "besieged in Julich"), divided by the governor's FP monogram. Each of the seven surrounded stamps bears the same monogram and date, and the denomination Z-S (2 Stüber). Overstruck on another coin. A very rare obsidional type struck during the 5-month siege of Julich by the Spanish under General Henri de Berg (Heinrich von dem Berg), after which the fortress under the command of Friedrich Pithan capitulated February 3, 1622 due to a shortage of food. Ambrosius Spinola had planned to launch an assault on the Dutch States-General from Julich following a 12-year ceasefire. Reportedly Pithan had ordered that emergency coins such as this be made both from melted-down tableware and existing old silver coins, with this specimen showing clear traces of an underlying legend. Extremely handsome with nearly no edge splits, and a clear statement piece for its future owner.
