Charles I silver "Death and Memorial" Medal ND (1649) MS63 PCGS, Eimer-162b, MI-I-347/201. Dies by J. Roettiers. These medals were issued in 1695 under the order of Charles II as a memorial to his father, who was beheaded in 1649 for treason, and are more commonly found in the bronze format. The obverse features an armored bust of Charles I facing right, and the reverse the Hand of God extending a crown above an English landscape. The legend in Latin translates to "Learn virtue from me, good fortune from others." The present example is much finer than the norm, the details of the design sharp and full with a distinct lack of the wear often seen, and pleasantly toned besides.
