George III silver Proof Pattern Crown ND (1820) PR62 NGC, ESC-2055. Plain edge. By Thomas Webb and George Mills for Mudie. A gorgeous pattern Crown, supposedly the finest portrait produced by Pistrucci of George III as professed by the artist himself. Lifelike detail is observed on the King's portrait--light crow's feet extending from his eye and the hint of a smile forming on his face--adding real character to his depiction, giving off a more sculpted effect. The reverse is equally pleasing, with its crowned cruciform of shields and national emblems residing within the angles. This near-select offering displays sublime gunmetal color, lighter at the centers and with a moodier presence at the margins, along with a well-delivered strike and only trivial forms of handling noted throughout the fields.
