John Kapodistrias bronzed-copper Specimen "Chief of the Philhellenes" Medal 1830 SP65 PCGS, 42mm. By Peuvrier. Jean-Gabriel Eynard a wealthy Swiss banker and a friend of Ioannis Kapodistrias, the first head of state of independent Greece, provided great financial support to the Greek cause during the Greek War of Independence. He was the considered "Chief" of the philhellene community in Europe, and for his services to the cause was made a Greek citizen. After the war, he served as an adviser to the Greek government, and following the assassination of Kapodistrias, his recommendation of Otho of Bavaria for the throne of Greece was adopted in 1832. The first example of the type we have offered, and quite pleasing besides, with purplish hues beginning to invade the obverse fields.
