Imam Ahmad gold Countermarked Riyal AH 1373 (1953/1954) MS62 PCGS, KM-YG17.1, Fr-8. These issues were struck in gold from the dies used for the silver Ahmadi Riyals (KM-Y17) and some bear an incuse stamp of the Arabic numeral 4 on the obverse, as upon the present example, to indicate their exchange value at 4 Sovereigns. It is known that most examples of the AH 1373 date of the silver Ahmadi Riyals exhibit evidence of having been struck from recut AH 1372 dies, displaying a visible extension of the final digit of the date to form the Arabic numeral 3. The present example appears to have been struck from one such pair of dies, and as such is undoubtedly extremely rare. Its superb condition certainly only contributes an additional layer to its appeal, as the type often appears with evidence of circulation or of damage from cleaning or mounting.
