LYDIA. Kroisos, ca. 564/53-550/39 B.C. AV Stater (10.77 gms), Sardes Mint. NGC Ch EF, Strike: 4/5 Surface: 4/5.
Berk-1; McClean-8635. Heavy standard. Prototype issue. Obverse: Confronted foreparts of lion, with "sun" on forehead, and bull; Reverse: Two incuse square punches. Emanating from the early series for this iconic design (spread across metals and denominations), this monumental example features a great strike on a somewhat oblong flan (typical of the issue) of very good metal. These prototype strikings are distinguished by presence of a pellet or a "sun"-like motif on the forehead of the lion, and are rather RARE, especially so attractive and radiant. Assuredly, an iconic piece from an early period of coinage.

Estimate: $35000.00- $45000.00
