PTOLEMAIC EGYPT. Arsinoe II Philadelphos, died 270/68 B.C. AV Octodrachm (Mnaieion/"Oktadrachm") (27.69 gms), Alexandreia Mint, struck under Ptolemy VI-VIII, ca. 180-116 B.C. NGC MS, Strike: 5/5 Surface: 2/5. Edge Marks & Cut, Graffito.
Svor-1242, 1374 & 1498-9; SNG Cop-321-2. Obverse: Veiled head right, wearing stephanos and ram's horn; lotus-tipped scepter in background, K to left; Reverse: APΣINOHΣ ΦIΛAΔEΛΦOY, filleted double cornucopia, with grape bunches hanging at sides. Extremely lustrous and perfectly struck, this bold example seemingly leaps off from the flan. Though numerous distractions are noted on the holder, the piece presents far better, with little evidence of the noted marks. A great example of the type, likely used at one point as the centerpiece for a brilliant piece of jewelry.
