MAJORIAN, A.D. 457-461. AV Solidus (4.35 gms), Arelate Mint, A.D. 459-461. NGC AU, Strike: 4/5 Surface: 4/5.
RIC-2628; Depeyrot-25/3. Obverse: D N IVLIVS MAIORIANVS P F AVG, helmeted, diademed, draped, and cuirassed bust right, holding spear and shield decorated with Christogram; Reverse: VICTORIA AVGGG, Majorian standing facing, with foot set upon human-headed serpent, holding long cross and victoriola; A/R//COMOB. A VERY RARE type, this lustrous example offers an incredibly sharp strike for the type, with complete legends and a rather bold nature. Just a slight degree of wear is noted on the high points, but in no way detracts from the incredible radiance which abounds throughout. A stunning specimen for a rather advanced collection of late Roman gold.
Estimate: $20000.00- $25000.00
