With a freshly crowned king, and a desire to conform to the monetary system used just to the south in the United States, the Canadian $5 gold coin was born. Alongside its $10 partner, a handful of presentation strikes were made to compliment the year's circulating mintage in 1912. Halted two years later in 1914 due to the outbreak of war, these few presentation pieces now exist as the only specially-manufactured issues of the type.
