Resulting from India's newfound independence from Britain, and the subsequent need to change the 'ET IND: IMP:' legend on Canadian coins, a number of intriguing varieties were created. With the shipment of new dies for 1948 coinage delayed, and the need to produce a circulating coin for commercial sake, the Royal Canadian Mint was forced to reuse 1947 dies until corrected ones became available. In order to differentiate from 1947 issues however, it was decided that a tiny maple leaf design would follow the date. To illustrate placement for this leaf, at least one die was marked with a dot, intended to notify the engraver where the leaf should be placed. Somehow missed, some of the dotted types were struck however and entered circulation, while others are thought to have been caught and destroyed at the mint. Today, this type that should have never been, as well as the intended Maple Leaf issues, remain highly sought for their connection to history and their numismatic lure.
