FRANCE. Carolingians. Denier, ND (ca. 817-43). Lothaire I. FINE Details.
cf. M/G-562/3; D/M-not listed; Roberts-not listed; Prou-not listed. Draped bust facing right, legend around "+HLOTHARIVSAGPS"; Reverse: Temple, legend around "+XPISTIAIIARILIGO". A VERY RARE issue in any grade with few examples known for all legend/bust varieties. The piece exhibits a shallow strike which seems to be par for the course on other example of this bust type. It also appears to have a cracked flan as well as a planchet chip near the edge with old signs of tooling on the obverse and being cleaned. Certainly a piece that has seen better days, but that RAREly appears on the market. Despite its shortcomings a real treat for the specialist looking for completion given the opportunity to add such desirable type.
Estimate: $1000.00- $1500.00
