The Duchy of Aquitaine was acquired by Charles from his brother, King Louis XI, after having him imprisoned during the conference at Peronne. At first Louis XI had agreed to the terms set before him and was released, but once free he reneged on the deal. Eventually Louis and Charles would reconcile with the duchy being granted to Charles in April 1469. Several years later in May 1472 in Bordeaux, Charles died right before he was to be married. The probably cause for his death seems to be tuberculosis and venereal disease. Since he had no legitimate heirs the province reverted back to the French crown.
