GERMANY. Mainz. Double Goldgulden, (1597-1622). NGC Unc Details--Surface Hairlines.
Fr-1689 (plate coin). EXTREMELY RARE with few examples known. Armored and caped Saint Martin on horse cuts his cape in half to clothe a naked beggar at his feet, legend "SANCTVS MARTINVS"; Reverse: Arms of Mainz in elaborate frame within tri-lobe, legend "AVREA. MOGVNCIA. S.R.E. S.V.F." A boldly struck intricate design depicting the iconic scene for which Saint Martin is best known on a broad flan with plenty of luster in the protected areas. Minor strike doubling is noticed on the reverse which seems to be par for the course for this gold rarity with signs of an old cleaning, as indicated by the NGC insert, now subdued and quite attractive displaying light golden-orange tone. An issue with few known survivors that seldom appears on the market destine for an advanced collection of German states.

The legend of St. Martin enjoyed vast popularity among the German states and an easily portrayed lesson in the virtue of charity. This important Abbey was a dependency of the Archbishop-Electors of Mainz (French, Mayence), and enjoyed a distinctly limited Gold coinage of which this delightful coin is the RAREst, sought by generations of dedicated collectors.

Estimate: $8000.00- $12000.00
