GREAT BRITAIN. Charles II Coronation Gold Medal, 1661. London Mint. PCGS SPECIMEN-62 Gold Shield.
MI-472/76; Eimer-221. By T. Simon. Obverse: CAROLVS II D G ANG SCO FR ET HI REX, crowned and mantled bust right, wearing Chain of the Garter; Reverse: EVERSO MISSVS SVCCVRRERE SECLO XXIII APR 1661, Charles, wearing royal robes, seated left on throne, being crowned by Victory flying to right from above. The highest graded example of the type across both services, this stunning specimen presents tremendous brilliance with some rather alluring hints of burgundy as one approaches the peripheries. A few scattered light marks are noted, but are wholly consistent with this near choice designation. For the connoisseur of coronation types, this is clearly a piece which would occupy a lofty position, as it exudes eye appeal RARELY encountered for the period.
