GREAT BRITAIN. James II Coronation Gold Medal, 1685. PCGS MS-61 Gold Shield.
MI-605/5; Eimer-273. By J. Roettiers. Obverse: IACOBVS II D G ANG SCO FR ET HI REX, laureate and draped bust left; Reverse: A MILITARI AD REGIAM, laurel wreath upon cushion; above, hand bearing crown emerging right from the heavens; in two lines in exergue, INAVGVRAT 23 AP / 1685. Already a RARE type within the series, this Mint State example stands as the only specimen in the PCGS census, with just one (an AU-58) in the NGC census. Incredibly vibrant and attractive, with a rather sharp strike and exceptional eye appeal. Quite likely one of the finest extant, and worthy of tremendous focus and observation, and assuredly destined for a monumental cabinet of coronation medals or late Stuart issues.

James II, the younger brother of Charles II, would reign for just three years from 1685-1688. Owing to his adherence to his Catholic faith, he was at odds with the Anglican sentiments of many, leading to his toppling and exile to France. In his place, his daughter and son-in-law, Mary and William of Orange--both protestants--were installed as the new monarchs in England.
