GREAT BRITAIN. Newark Besieged 1/2 Crown, 1646. Charles I. NGC AU-55.
S-3140a; KM-371. Weight: 15.44 gms. A premium example of this immensely sought siege/emergency issue type, which possesses deep olive-brown color throughout and moments of added iridescence around some of the designs. Considering the haste in which these were manufactured, the strike of this example remains impressively sharp as well, showing complete definition in the centers and only slight softening towards some of the edges. As the single finest graded (of either date) at either NGC or PCGS, this example deserves heightened attention, as its addition will surely add quality and context to the next collection it enters.
A relic from this turbulent civil war period that ultimately saw the royalist forces concede tightly held Newark on May 6, 1646, the day after King Charles I had fled the fortress in secret to surrender himself personally to the besieging Scots.
Estimate: $4000.00- $6000.00
