ITALY. Milan. 2 Scudi d'Oro, ND (1534-56). NGC VF-35.
Fr-708a; MIR-278/2 (plate coin); Nomisma-45; Crippa-2/A; CNI-14. An EXTREMELY RARE type that seldom appears on the market. Draped, laureate head of the Emperor right, "IMP. CAES. CAROLVS. V. AUG."; Reverse: Pillars of Hercules over waves, scroll is inscribed with widely separated letters "PLUS ULTRA", More Beyond, i.e. the New World then also largely under Habsburg rule. This reverse variety is described in Friedberg showing the pillars "with imperial mitre," the crown suggesting a Bishops headdress. Here is an imperious and imperial portrait and design recalling the greatest years of the European Habsburgs, the width of whose domains gave the Emperor the unofficial title "Charles of Europe". A handsome moderately worn survivor of this highly sought after type exhibiting strong details and attractive light patina displaying lovely sunset hues in the peripherals. A real treat for the specialist destined for a fine cabinet of Italian gold issues.

Estimate: $25000.00- $35000.00
