PERU. 8 Reales, 1823-L JP. Lima Mint. Ferdinand VII. PCGS VF-30 Gold Shield.
KM-117.3; FC-85b; Grunthal-Sellscopp-287d. VERY RARE found struck over a Republican issue. Overstruck on an 182X-LIMA JP Peru "Libre" 8 Reales. Signs of the original host can be seen on both the obverse and reverse without the aid of magnification, but the last digit of the host date is obscured. A lightly toned and attractive example destined for an advanced collection of Peruvian coinage or bust 8 Reales.

Royalist forces reoccupied the city of Lima between 17 June and 18 July 1823. Before departing they removed the majority of the minting equipment, moved it the to fortress Real Felipe in Callao and burned down the mint. The overstruck examples are the result of a small quantity of Libre type 8 Reales found at the mint after the patriot forces abandoned the city.
