Originally New Lanark mills was owned and operated by David Dale who retired in 1799 and sold New Lanark, at the time the largest cotton mill in Scotland, for 60,000 pounds to Mr. Robert Owen of Manchester. When Mr. Owen became managing partner on 1 January 1800 he quickly began to tighten control of costs, quality, management practices, monitor wages and time-keeping resulting in the dismissal of a number of employees. Though he was strict he was fair and won the approval of his employees. The mill offered free education for children and had a church among other improvements in living standards.
