WORLD GOLD COINS

GREAT BRITAIN. Gold Lifesaving Award Medal.
46 mm; 66.58 gms. Eimer-unlisted; Brown-unlisted, but the obverse is used for the Queen Victoria Personal Medal, #1991. Diademed bust of Victoria left. Reverse: Legend "FOR SAVING THE PASSENGERS AND CREW OF THE BRITISH EMIGRANT SHIP INDIA". A crowned oak lead wreath encloses the further legend: "FROM THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT TO CAPTAIN LE COZANNET OF THE FRENCH WHALER ROLAND", date 1841 below wreath.

The India route from Greenock, Scotland to Port Philip, Australia, caught fire and sank 1,200 miles east of Rio de Janeiro resulting in the loss of 17 of her crew and passengers. The surviving 176 were rescued by the Roland and transported to safety. Captain Le Cozannet was awarded this medal plus 1,000 Francs to be distributed among his crew for their heroic efforts.

No doubt a unique piece, long used as jewelry (mounting vestiges on rim) resulting in myriad tiny abrasions, none of which are singularly distracting.VERY FINE.

Estimate: $3000
