ROMAN EMPIRE

CALIGULA, A.D. 37-41. AE Sestertius (29.9 gms), Rome Mint, A.D. 39-40.
RIC-46. Laureate head of Caligula left; Reverse: SPQR / P.P. OB. CIVES / SERVATOS in four lines, wreath around. The identity of Caligula was removed in the legend through the effacement of the first C and perhaps additional letters, but was later re-engraved. The field area around being shallow, and the first few letters of the legend weak. Mottled mahogany brown patina. Tooled, as mentioned, but good detail, bold portraiture and decent eye appeal. A rarer type.VERY FINE.

Estimate: $800
