HARD TIMES TOKEN: 1838, Am I Not a Woman and a Sister, Anti-Slavery token. Cleaned, otherwise, VF- XF condition. These words appeared on abolitionist tokens that circulated in the US and in Great Britain. The American Anti-Slavery Society, located at 143 Nassau Street, New York, commissioned the firm of Gibbs Gardner & Co. of Belleville, N.J. to strike these copper tokens. the powerful image and words spoke of the plight of African Americans struggling for basic human rights while also calling attention to women's rights.
