Ostrogothic Italy, Baduila (541-552). AE Decanummium, Rome mint, c. 549-552 AD. D/ [DN BAD] VILA REX. Helmeted and mantled bust facing, holding cross on globus cruciger in left hand. R/ FLVRIAS (sic) SEMPER (the two S retrograde). Badulia wearing helmet and military dress, standing right and holding spear and shield; X (mark of value) in right field. BMC 45 var.; Kraus S 195,62 var.; MIB I, 41, 90 b var.; Arslan -. AE. g. 7.69 mm. 20.00 R. Rare and in excellent condition for issue. Deep emerald green patina. Good VF/VF.

The figure on the reverse probably represents the king, since the same type was accompanied by the king's name on decanummia of the slightly earlier king Athalaric (526-534 AD). The wish expressed in the reverse legend will therefore have been meant for Baduila: "May you flourish forever! ". (Gemini XIII, 275 note).
