George III. 1760-1820. AV sovereign. 21.5 mm. 1817 (first year of issue). His laureate head right / St. George and the dragon. S. 3785. Near Very Fine; scratch on portrait; in a NGC slab "SS NEW YORK SHIPWRECK EFFECT (A) VF"

Charmingly packaged in a box made to look like a small antique book entitled "SS New York (compass rose) Gentlemen of Fortune" with four pages of text from a contemporary New Orleans newspaper "The Daily Picayune" reporting the loss of the sidewheel steamship "New York" in a storm in the Gulf of Mexico in 1846. (Lot includes "Shipwreck and Treasure of the S.S. New York," an internet account of this steamship shuttling between Galveston and New Orleans in the 1840s, its loss in a hurricane in 1846, and its turn of the 21st century recovery.)
