Bearded bust of Tancred facing, wearing turban and chain mail, and holding a sword; +KE BO TO TANKRE (or similar) around / Cross with pellets at the end of each arm; IC XC NI KA in quarters. CCS 4a. Metcalf, Crusades 63-70. Schlumberger pl. 2, 7. Wäckerlin 85-87. Very Fine; glossy green patina with attractive red earthen deposits; traces of overstriking.

The Crusades were a series of military campaigns largely designed by Christians to recover the Holy Land from Islamic rule. Eight major expeditions occurred primarily between 1096 and 1291.
