Henry IV. 1399-1413. AR penny. 1 gm. 17 mm. Heavy coinage. Type II. 1399-1412. Facing later crowned bust with no star on breast; saltire stops / ...LON DON. S. 1720. N. 1349. Cf Potter. BNJ XXX (1961), pl x: 11. Near Very Fine; very rare ("ER" in North).
"Heavy coinage" issues from the reign of Henry IV mostly ended up in melting pots because the bullion value exceeded the face value. As a consequence, coins of this entire reign are scarce because Henry IV only lived for a few months after the "light coinage" that eliminated the imbalance between face and bullion value came about.
