Hadrian. Denarius; Hadrian; 117-138 AD, Rome, c. 133-5 AD, Denarius, 3.08g. RSC-789e ("Now in BM"), RIC-2001 (S), BM-649 var. Obv: HADRIANVS - AVG COS III P P Head bare r. Rx: FORTVNAE R - E - DVCI Hadrian, togate and holding roll, standing r., clasping hands with Fortuna Redux, who stands l. and holds cornucopia. Ex CNG 136, 29 March 2006, lot 233. A scarce reverse type commemorating Hadrian's return to Rome from his second great tour c. 131-2 AD; rare variant omitting the rudder on globe that is usually visible behind the standing Fortuna Redux on reverse. RSC-789e (misprinted 789d) records that there is such a coin in BM, acquired after the publication of BMC III in 1936; RIC-2001 notes that the rudder is sometimes omitted, but without illustrating that variety or specifying where such a coin can be found..
