Caracalla. Denarius; Caracalla; 198-217 AD, Rome, 199 AD, Denarius, 3.19g. BM-157 corr., C-498, RIC-29. Obv: ANTONINVS - AVGVSTVS Bust laureate, draped, cuirassed r. Rx: PONT - TR P II Securitas seated r. before altar, supportng head with r. hand and holding scepter with l. From the Philip Ashton Collection, ex Berk 111, 28 October 1999, lot 317. Scarce: only 12 specimens in Reka Devnia hoard. The die engraver does not deserve high marks for this reverse die: Securitas' throne is tipped back at an incorrect angle, and to reach the ground line its front leg therefore had to be made considerably longer than its back leg!Extremely beautiful portrait with fancy drapery.
