Caracalla. Denarius; Caracalla; 198-217 AD, Rome, 203 AD, Denarius, 2.95g. Rev. type var. of BM-280, C-97 corr., and RIC-130a. Obv: ANTONINVS - PIVS AVG Bust laureate, draped r. Rx: INDVLGENTIA AVGG around, IN CARTH in exergue, Dea Caelestis, head front and holding thunderbolt and scepter, riding r. on lion above water flowing from rocks. The scarcer variety of this reverse type, not accurately described in the standard catalogues, with Dea Caelestis' head facing rather than turned right. Though the goddess' actual facial features are unclear on our specimen, dots indicating hair on both sides of her head seem to guarantee that she is depicted facing rather than looking right. For unquestionable specimens of this scarcer variety see CNG E178, 2007, 144 and CGB MBS 11, 2002, 294.. MS
