Trajan. Sestertius; Trajan; 98-117 AD, Rome, 98-9 AD, Sestertius, 22.93g. Woytek, MIR-58c (15 spec.); bust var. of BM-718, RIC-401, and C-586 corr. (4 Fr.). Obv: IMP CAES NERVA TRAIA - N AVG GERM P M Bust laureate r., Medusa head and fold of aegis on front shoulder and behind neck. Rx: TR POT - COS II P P around, S C in exergue, Pax seated l. holding branch and transverse scepter. Scarce bust type with aegis on shoulders. The throne seat on reverse is unusual for having (a) two cross struts rather than the normal one, and (b) a separate foot on each leg resembling an olive on a toothpick, apparently different from the "spearpoint" feet that are also attested, e.g. Woytek pl. 8, 58a¹.Exceptionally well struck and beautifully created early portrait of Trajan. Smooth, flawless surfaces with an early portrait that rarely comes in this quality. EF
