'Abbasid, al-Mutawakkil, AH 232-247 / AD 847-861, gold double dinar for presentation (8.16g, 31mm). Surra man Ra'a AH 243, citing al-Mu'tazz as heir-apparent, A‑T229, lovely style, broad outer margin on both sides, probably unique.  Choice Extremely Fine.A remarkable medallic double dinar, produced by the last great Abbasid caliph. al-Mutawakkil is said to have had a 'thirst for magnificence' as evidenced by this extraordinary coin. His reign is viewed as a golden age, during which the caliphate enlarged and beautified the capital city of Samarra, tightened its control over Armenia and Egypt, and instituted a number of religious reforms. Aa-Mutawakkil, however, grew unpopular late in his reign, partially due to his persecution of the popular Shia Imam Ali al-Hadi. He was assassinated by a Turkish soldier, sparking the nine-year "Anarchy of Samarra" that precipitated the fracturing of Abbasid power.

Estimate: 20000-25000 USD
