Although a Christian state, the Normans continued to use Arabic on their gold coins until about 1220, during the reign of Federico II. The mint city is now known as Messina, in the north-east section of the island of Sicily. The Greek text around the cross on the reverse is IC XC NI KA, "may Jesus Christ conquer."
