Mysore, Tipu Sultan, AH 1196-1214 / AD 1782-1799, gold mohur (10.90g, 25mm). Patan AH 1197 year one (ahad). Perfect strike on broad flan. Choice Mint State. Tipu Sultan struck gold coins of the standard weight of the Indian mohur during the first few years of his reign, bearing the date in the Muslim calendar, with its denomination sometimes, but incorrectly, described as "four pagodas." During his fifth regnal year, the mohur was replaced by a 25% heavier gold coin, sometimes known as sawai mohur, otherwise as five kori, and actually identical to the weight of four pagodas (see following lot).
