Son of Antiochus IV, Antiochus V became king of the Seleucid empire when he was nine years old. The corrupt council ruling in his name was weak, and during the following three years large parts of the empire were lost. When in 162 Demetrius I, the son of Seleucus IV, escaped from Rome where he had lived for years as a hostage, Antiochus was murdered and Demetrius acclaimed as the new ruler.
