Palestine, Group of 9 Charity Tokens. Includes two Chevra Kadisha tokens (Haffner CC-16), with large Hebrew letters reading "Tzedakah" (charity), which were described in a Kedem Auction House catalog as "meant for carriers of coffins or given to beggars in the Mount of Olives Cemetery [in the 1890s]. Once a quantity of tokens was accumulated they could be exchanged for Turkish money." Two similar pieces carry different inscriptions ? beginning with an aleph. Next is a rectangular token c. 1900, with a 3-line Hebrew inscription which translates "Charity saves (you) from Death." Another two are 20th Century tokens from Aleppo; they state "you shall be established in righteousness." All of the previously described tokens are nice quality. The last two in this group are well worn, primitively made Petah Tikva charity tokens (Haffner CC-6) "made and issued before World War I." An important group. Estimated Value $300 - UP
From The Abe Sofaer Collection.
