Cuba Liberation Army 3 Pesos 16.2.1898 Very Fine. Cuba engaged Spain in three wars for Independence, intermittently from 1868 to 1898 and as such, there were many Cuban War veterans by 1898. Before the Spanish-American War, this localized paper currency was issued for veterans of those previous wars. Printed text at front offers explanation, and was payable to Josefa Rodriges, "widow". The payment is authorized with the fountain-pen signature of Colonel Rodolpho Berges, to be used for purchases in stores in the "Free Territory of Cuba". Berges was not only a veteran, but also heavily involved with politics in 19th Century Cuba. The back of this uniface type features manuscript notations which indicate a shopping list from "The Pearl Store", and declining balance after each shopping trip. The balance stops after three trips, but was never fully redeemed and never submitted for reimbursement by the store owner or Mrs. Rodriges. This piece is dated right in the middle of the most important week in Cuban history, issued the day after the sinking of the U.S.S. Maine. The sinking ushered America into war against the Spanish, and ultimately earning Cuba's independence. Included is a certificate from the National Numismatic Museum of Cuba asserting their authenticity of the item. An extremely rare piece of Cuban numismatic history that intertwines their struggle for Independence, which is presented here today with an estimate for which we have no comparable prices.
