After independence from France in 1960, the former equatorial colonies entered into similar economic pacts to stabilize currency in the region. The Central Bank of the Equatorial African States was founded in 1963, and code letters were used to identify notes issued for Chad, Central African Republic, Republic of the Congo, Gabon, and Cameroon.
