German New Guinea Treasury Note 5 Marks 1915 Pick 1b PMG About Uncirculated 50 Net. An extremely rare World War I type, this note represents the initial issue from the only series of paper notes created for German New Guinea. German colonization of the eastern part of the archipelago began in the 1880s and concluded after after the Treaty of Versailles in 1919. The 1894 series of coinage for the colony is one of the most sought after of all world coins, but this series of banknotes is mostly unknown due to their extreme rarity. Australian occupation of the colony during World War I necessitated the issuance of some sort of paper currency; hence these unprepossessing types. Printed crudely, often times with shoe polish, these notes circulated briefly before being cancelled sometime in 1915. This example has an excellent face appearance, but has faint or faded inking. The serial numbers are redrawn, and the blank backing of this note has mount remnants. This is only the second example we have offered and one of less than a dozen known to exist today. This is an important historical rarity. https://currency.ha.com/itm/world-currency/german-new-guinea-treasury-note-5-marks-1915-pick-1b-pmg-about-uncirculated-50-net/a/4025-28338.s?type=CoinArchivesCurrency4025 HID08706262019 © 2020 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved
