The city of San Felipe de Asturia de Oruro was founded on November 1, 1606, by Don Manuel Castro de Padilla as a silver-mining center in the Urus region. At the time it was named Real Villa de San Felipe de Austria, after the Spanish monarch Philip III. It thrived for a while, but it was eventually abandoned as the silver mines became exhausted. Oruro was reestablished by European Bolivians in the nineteenth century as a tin mining center. There were plans to open an official mint there in 1849, but it was never realized. A superb strike with one minor planchet defect, but perhaps one of the finest known specimens of this rare type. Krause says "approximately 35 to 45 pieces estimated to exist", but even rarer as unholed, for which Krause says "so rare that no clear price range is yet established."
