GUATEMALA: Republic, AR 8 reales (18.16g), ND (1839), Type II countermark on cut-down (roughly 34x27mm) DM Peru 8 reales assayer JP (KM-117.1), coin is cut down to a rectangular shape with rounded corners with a tab at the top that is holed to wear as a medallion, interesting piece! Choice VF on Fine host. It is uncertain if this piece was cut down before or after the countermark was applied. After an extensive search, we have been unable to find any evidence of an official Guatemala countermark on another Spanish Colonial portrait coin of any denomination. We have seen cobs with a similar shape as this made into medallions. Certainly an enigmatic piece deserving of more research.
