ALAWI SHARIF: Muhammad III, 1757-1790, AR 10 dirhams (mithqal) (28.38g), AH1195, A-597, KM-37, 33mm size, 1st standard type with Qur'an 9:34, EF, RR, ex Dr. Axel Wahlstedt Collection. This Qur'an verse admonishes those who hoard gold and silver without spending it in a godly manner, first used on the multiple dirhams of the Samanids and their rivals in the late 4th/10th century. Struck only at Tetuan in 1195, either on a broad flan of about 39mm or a narrow and thicker flan of about 32-34mm, of equal rarity. Both this type and A-591 and A-592 probably failed because they weighed about 8% more than the already circulating Spanish-American 8 real silver coins and were just melted down by merchants.
