TUNIS: Muhammad III al-Sadiq, 1859-1882, AR medal, AH1281, 31mm, Medal for the Expedition Against Ali Ben Gdahoum in the Mejba Revolt of 1864, wreath of laurel branches is a trophy of arms and flags, iftikhar 1281 in Arabic at center // within two laurel branches, is muhammad al-sadiq bey in Arabic, pierced as normal, EF, R. The Mejba Revolt (1864-65) was a rebellion in Tunisia against the doubling of an unpopular poll tax (the mejba) imposed on his subjects by Sadok Bey. The most extensive revolt against the rule of the Husainid Beys of Tunis, it saw uprisings all over the country and came close to prompting military intervention by Britain and France. The revolt was suppressed with great brutality and the government became ever more seriously indebted to foreign creditors, backed by European governments, until it was finally unable to resist French occupation in 1881. Muhammad III al-Sadiq Bey created on the 4th Hidje AH1281 (April 29, 1865) a medal for those who took part in suppressing the insurrection of the Arabs, led by Ali ben Gdahoum, in 1864. The medal was of gold for officers and of silver for the privates. It was 31mm in diameter, and holed for the suspension ring, while the officers' medal had a gold knot of three loops surmounting the medal. The ribbon would be green with two red stripes on each side.
