Danelaw, in the name of Alfred (c. 890-900), Penny, in the style of the 'London Monogram', type A4, 1.12g, 4h, +ELFR-ED RE, L and F inverted, double-diademed bust right, wearing semi-circular tunic banded with vertical hatching, rev. 'LONDONIA Monogram', C for letter L, bar of A omitted, small cross pattée to left, quatrefoil above, three wedges below, trefoil above and pellet below I all in D, two pellets within O (W J Andrew [BNJ I, 1903-4], pl. 1, 9 this coin; MacKay, Danelaw, dies 15 (O15/R15), coin 1; N.644; Spink 964), minor edge loss between 6 and 8 o'clock, otherwise a sumptuous even tone overlying slightly crimped surfaces, the central devices superbly struck-up with finely incised details accentuating an enchanting portrait, good extremely fine, very rare, and with an excellent pedigree traced to the Cuerdale trove.
