Wessex, Alfred the Great (871-899), Penny, 'London Monogram', type A1(ii), 1.58g, 11h, AELFR-ED REX, diademed bust right with ornate tunic, rev. LONDONIA Monogram, cross above, pellets within O, and cluster of nine in pile below (MacKay, London, dies 8 (O3/R8), coin 1; N.644; Spink 1061), an evidently late striking from a rusty obverse die, otherwise on a full flan with a neat uniform 'charcoal' tone, good very fine, a desirable example of this talismanic type.
