IRAN. Qajar Dynasty. Fath'alî Shâh, 1212-1250 H./1797-1834 AD. Silver coinage.
Hybrid 19th century jeweller's strike of an old 17th century original Safawid obverse die with the Shiite shahâda surrounded by the names of the Twelve imams and a smaller, presumably imitative reverse die for a Riyâl or Toman 1236 H., mint: Yazd. 6.34 g (Qiran weight). 6.34 g. Interesting. Ex mount in accordance to the initial purpose, very fine.
(~€ 95/USD 110)

Such jeweller's imitation are often associated with Turkoman jewellery production. As Turkomans were able to capture and loot several Eastern Iranian cities during the 19th century it is not astonishing to find obviously authentic coin dies used for such objects. Although isolated specimens are to be found in all major collections, they have never been researched in context.
