Anne (1702-1714), Pre-Union, Five-Guineas, 1705 QVARTO, diademed and draped bust left, rev. crowned shields cruciform, emblem-adorned sceptres in angles, six strings to harp, + DECVS ET TVTAMEN ANNO REGNI QVARTO upwards on edge, 41.74g, 6h (Murdoch II, 835; King 143; Schneider II, -; MCE 198; Spink 3560), a majestic example with gloriously brilliant if faintly bagmarked fields, a trace of adjustment in third quarter of reverse, otherwise a peripheral reddish tone enhancing this choice specimen, an attractively bold extremely fine, very rare thus.

It is interesting to note that at the time of the Whetmore dispersal (Glendining, 24-25 March 1943), the 1705 Five-Guineas was thought of as a Proof striking (lot 3), elevating above the renowned 1703 VIGO issue (lot 4). With an example such as the present brilliant specimen, it is easy to see why.
Estimate: £100,000 - £120,000
