When George III entered the 58th year of his reign he exceeded those of all previous monarchs. The medal is also found in Barton's metal, named after Sir John Barton (1771–1834), who was Deputy Comptroller of the Royal Mint. William Wyon had been appointed assistant engraver to the Mint in the previous year, aged only 21.
