Foreign Medals, Singapore, Sir Stamford Raffles (1781-1826), silver prize medal of the Raffles Institution, founded 1823, unsigned, undated and unnamed, bust of Raffles r., rev. oak and olive wreath, RAFFLES INSTITUTION SINGAPORE, 39mm., ball and ring suspender, extremely fine and very rare
The Raffles Institution was founded in 1823 by Sir Stamford Raffles and, happily, still flourishes today, the oldest school in the former colony. Raffles wanted to establish a college to provide education for the children of local leaders, of the East India Company's employees and others who wished to learn the local languages. It has since moved from the original site at the junction of Bras Basah and Beach Road and is now an independent school, providing secondary education.
