The 81st ( Loyal Lincoln Volunteers) played a part in capturing the great hill fortress of Ali Musjid which dominated the Khyber Pass, the northern route from India to Kabul, and then in defending the route against local tribal raids. However, they were to be so badly stricken by sickness that they were ordered back to India in January 1879 and played no further part in the war.
